1-Day Trip from Marrakech to Ait Benhaddou
Discover the High Atlas Mountains and Ait Benhaddou
Start your day early at 7:30 am, departing from Marrakech in a private vehicle or minivan. Despite the early start, the journey will be worth it as you explore some of Morocco’s most stunning kasbahs. You’ll travel south, ascending the High Atlas Mountains and crossing the Tizi n’ Tichka Pass, also known as the ‘Gateway to the Sahara.’ At 2260 meters, it is the highest pass in Morocco, offering breathtaking views.
As the landscape transforms, the familiar red clay soil of the region starts to dominate, marking the approach to your first stop: Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou.
Visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ait Ben Haddou
Located on a hillside overlooking the Ounila River, Ait Ben Haddou was once an essential trading route. This beautiful fortified town, dating back to the 18th century, showcases impressive earthen construction. With its layers of connected terraced kasbahs (houses) surrounded by high walls, the site is visually striking, especially against the deep blue African sky. You may recognize it from famous films like Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, and Asterix and Obelix.
Lunch and Exploration in Ouarzazate
After lunch at Ait Ben Haddou, continue to the city of Ouarzazate, a large desert city often called the ‘African Hollywood.’ Explore the red-clay medina and visit Taourirt Kasbah, a 19th-century palace with over 300 rooms. This former home of Touhami El Glaoui, the ‘Lord of the Atlas,’ tells the story of a powerful warlord who controlled caravan trade routes to West Africa with the support of the Colonial French government.
Atlas Studios: The Heart of African Filmmaking
No trip to Ouarzazate would be complete without visiting Atlas Studios, one of the world’s largest film studios. Here, many iconic films have been shot, cementing Ouarzazate’s reputation as the cinematic hub of Africa.
Return to Marrakech
After a day filled with adventure and discovery, you’ll return to Marrakech late in the afternoon, reflecting on the stunning landscapes and historic sites you’ve experienced.
